Yasuni Volunteer
Yasuni Volunteer: Cultural & Ecological Conservation in the Amazon
The Yasuni Kichwa Community of Pilchi is located in the heart of the Ecuadorian Amazon, a pristine and biodiverse region. Situated just three hours from the city of Coca, the community is home to Mandi Forest and Lodge, an ecotourism project aimed at conserving the local ecosystem and preserving Kichwa culture. The name “Mandi,” meaning “leaf” in Kichwa, reflects the abundant vegetation that thrives in Mandi Forest.
The mission of the Mandi Forest project is to conserve and protect 3,000 hectares of primary forest, offering a safe sanctuary for the region’s diverse flora and fauna. Focused on sustainable community development, the project also educates and empowers locals while offering visitors an immersive experience in the natural wonders of the Amazon rainforest.
Mission & Values
Pilchi values its visitors deeply, as much as they appreciate the project’s efforts in conservation and cultural preservation. The community is committed to providing a respectful environment where all individuals feel welcomed, safe, and involved in meaningful cultural exchanges. The Mandi Lodge serves as the center for this unique interaction, where volunteers engage with the local Kichwa people and contribute to the conservation of both the environment and the indigenous way of life.
Volunteer Activities
Volunteers are an essential part of the ongoing efforts to preserve the region’s biodiversity and culture. Below are some of the key activities volunteers can engage in:
Flora and Fauna Conservation
- Native Plant Species Project: Work closely with the Kichwa community to collect seeds and learn about the diverse range of native plants found in the jungle.
- Medicinal & Wild Plant Garden: Help establish gardens that feature medicinal plants and wild species, which are vital to the community’s health and cultural heritage.
- Floral Gardens for Hummingbirds: Assist in the creation of a garden designed to attract and support local hummingbird populations.
- Wildlife Identification: Volunteer to document and register the diverse animal and plant species within the Mandi Reserve, contributing to important scientific data on the area’s biodiversity.
- Ecological Pathways Maintenance: Help maintain the ecological trails throughout the Mandi Lodge where visitors can learn about the flora, fauna, and conservation efforts in the area.
Ecological Construction of a Community Library
- Cultural Repository: Help collect Kichwa language dictionaries, books in Spanish, English, and other languages for the community library.
- Flora & Fauna Exhibition: Work on curating an exhibition of the region’s wildlife and plant life, enhancing educational opportunities for both locals and visitors.
- Art and Cultural Displays: Contribute to a gallery of photos, artwork, and cultural pieces that celebrate the heritage of the Kichwa community.
- Guestbook Creation: Assist in the development of a guestbook to document visitors and volunteers who come to learn and help.
Volunteer Workshops
As part of the volunteer experience, you can also participate in or lead workshops designed to empower the local Kichwa community:
- Language & Communication Skills: English lessons for guides and students to enhance their ecotourism capabilities.
- Scientific Research: Teach community members how to conduct their own scientific research and document findings.
- Art & Culture Workshops: Offer workshops in various creative fields such as photography, video, music, painting, and theater.
- Human Rights: Lead discussions and education sessions on human rights, focusing on territory, health, and environmental issues.
- Health & Eco-Tourism: Share knowledge on health practices, eco-tourism, and sustainable living practices to support community development.
Cultural Exchange
Volunteers will also take part in an enriching cultural exchange, where they will learn about the Kichwa way of life and the traditional practices that have been passed down through generations. This cultural immersion is essential to understanding the community’s values and their strong connection to the land. You can document your experience through photography, video, and other forms of media to preserve and promote Kichwa cultural heritage.
